About me. About this website.
I'm a photographer and musician living in the amazing city of Portland, Maine. I grew up in the dark dirt in the 'coal region' of Pennsylvania. I think growing up in that area left a grim residue in me that sometimes shows up in my creative work. I spent a great deal of time exploring the abandoned buildings and empty spaces that the retreating and collapsing industry had left behind.
In my mid-teens, I got my hands on a candy-apple-red Fender Stratocaster and taught myself how to play. That guitar, which I still have decades later, sustained me through the alienation in high school and the years of soul deadening factory jobs that followed. Playing music was an avenue of escape and a critical means of expression. It was the only way I had to be genuinely who I was. I find this still resonates in the same way today. I tapped into something with that instrument in my hands and it’s kept me going all this time.
Music remained unique in this way throughout my life; there was nothing at all like it. That changed the first time I picked up a camera with any form of serious intent. Over the past ten years, I’ve come to regard my camera in a similar sense to one of my guitars. My camera is also an instrument of escape and expression. When holding either my guitar or my camera, I have no sense of time and there is no energy quite like that of participating in art. The way I described this may seem vague and may even seem trite or pretentious, but it’s the only way I know how to articulate it.
This website is a vehicle for me to put out what I’m creating. I have no clear road-map or framework for this endeavor. In designing the site, my guiding principle was to develop it in such a way that it was a capable platform to support whatever it is I might come up with, photography, music, video, writing and so on. I dabble in all of these mediums, but based on my output over the past few years, photography will most likely be the staple here.
I appreciate that you are here browsing my website and I hope you find my work something worthwhile.
